How long does a DBS Check take?
When it comes to background checks for various purposes, including job applications, healthcare roles, and more, understanding the timeline is crucial. In this guide, we’ll delve into the question: “How long does a DBS check take?” Whether you’re seeking information about DBS check processing times in 2024, or the duration for specific roles like NHS positions and carers, we’ve got you covered.
What is a DBS Check?
DBS stands for Disclosure and Barring Services, previously known as Criminal Records Bureau and aims to provide a service that allows recruiters and employers to make safer hiring decisions.
There are four different types of DBS checks:
- A Basic Check
- A Standard Check
- An Enhanced Check
- An Enhanced Check with barred lists
Different types of DBS checks are needed because each of them serves a different purpose, for example, an enhanced check is required when more information is needed from an individual such as a detailed police check.
Can I upgrade my application?
Unfortunately, we cannot accept a Standard or Enhanced check application from an individual.
As stated on our website:
An individual cannot access a Standard/Enhanced DBS Check themselves; this must be applied for by the organisation the individual is working for.
If you wish to obtain an Enhanced/Standard DBS Check on yourself, the organisation that requires it from you, will need to apply for our Organisation Application.
How long does a DBS check take?
In 2024 a DBS Check takes anywhere between 2 and 7 days to get your certificate but in some cases, it can take up to 14 days. However, certificates are issued by Disclosure Scotland and The Disclosure & Barring Service England & Wales, and therefore the issue time is out of our hands. Also, please note that it could take longer if further information is requested by us and/or the Disclosure & Barring Service.
Sometimes a DBS checks timeframe is based on what level of check is requested and sometimes there is no set timeframe or deadline. A basic DBS can take as quick as 1 working day whereas an enhanced DBS Check where both the DBS and the police jointly complete the application can take up to 4 weeks.

Standard DBS Check Processing Time
Standard DBS checks, typically required for roles that involve minimal contact with vulnerable groups, now have an average processing time of around 5 to 10 working days. This represents a notable improvement from previous years, thanks to digitalization and streamlined procedures.
Enhanced DBS Check Processing Time
For positions that involve regular contact with vulnerable individuals, such as those in the healthcare sector, enhanced DBS checks are necessary. In 2024, these checks generally take around 2 to 4 weeks to complete. However, factors like the complexity of the role and the accuracy of the information provided can influence the processing time.
Specific Scenarios and Processing Times
- NHS Roles: DBS checks for NHS roles tend to be prioritized due to the critical nature of healthcare services. In most cases, these checks take approximately 10 to 15 working days. Health institutions often collaborate closely with the DBS to expedite the process.
- Online Application: Thanks to digital submission and online identity verification, applicants can expect results in as little as 3 to 5 working days, making it a preferred option for many.
- Carers and Support Workers: Roles involving care and support may require enhanced DBS checks. These checks usually take around 2 to 4 weeks to complete, ensuring thorough scrutiny of the applicant’s background before they engage with vulnerable individuals.
Factors That Impact Processing Time
Several factors can affect the processing time:
- Accuracy of Information: Providing complete and accurate details in your application can expedite the process.
- Type of Check: Different levels of checks (standard, enhanced) have varying processing times.
- Local Police Services: The efficiency of local police services involved in the check can influence the timeline.
- Volume of Applications: High application volumes during peak periods can lead to slightly longer processing times.
Applying for an Enhanced DBS Check: A Closer Look
When applying for an enhanced DBS check, it’s essential to understand the intricacies of the process. This level of check is especially relevant for roles that involve close contact with vulnerable individuals, such as healthcare workers and teachers. The enhanced DBS check processing time in 2024 typically ranges from around 2 to 4 weeks, reflecting the thorough investigation of an applicant’s background, including their criminal history.
Applicants undergoing an enhanced check should expect a slightly longer processing time before the results come back, which varies based on the complexity of the role. This extended duration allows for a comprehensive examination of an individual’s criminal history, ensuring that organizations can make informed decisions about the safety of their vulnerable service users, particularly in roles like NHS positions.
The Convenience of Online DBS Check Applications
In the digital age, convenience is key. Online DBS check applications have revolutionized the process, offering applicants a quicker and more efficient route to obtaining their results. By submitting applications digitally, applicants can bypass the hassles of paperwork and postal delays.
Online applications also come with the advantage of rapid identity verification, a vital step that impacts how long it takes to process a DBS check. The integration of digital ID checks means that you no longer need to visit physical locations for identity validation. This innovation significantly reduces the processing time, allowing applicants to receive results in as little as 3 to 5 working days.
Factors That Impact DBS Check Processing Times
Several factors play a role in determining the processing time for a DBS check. Understanding these factors can help you anticipate potential delays and manage your expectations.
The Role Complexity Factor
Roles that require different levels of interaction with vulnerable individuals can influence processing times. For instance, a DBS check for NHS roles might involve more rigorous scrutiny due to the sensitive nature of healthcare services. The complexity of the role dictates the level of scrutiny required, affecting the overall processing duration.
Leveraging Digitalisation for Faster Results
The integration of digital technology has revolutionized the way DBS checks are conducted. Digital DBS check submissions and identity verification expedites results processing. With digital submissions and identity verification, results are processed more efficiently.
Digitalisation also enables instant sharing of results with the applicant, further streamlining the overall process. This seamless integration of technology minimises the margin for error and reduces administrative bottlenecks, leading to faster results and happier applicants.
Conclusion
Whether you’re seeking a standard or enhanced check, understanding the average waiting periods for different roles and utilizing digital solutions can empower you with the knowledge needed to plan ahead. The evolving world of background checks is becoming more efficient and convenient in 2023, and by staying updated, you can confidently move forward in your professional journey.
By adhering to the DBS check process and utilizing the appropriate level of checks, organizations can ensure a safer working environment and make informed decisions that protect the interests and well-being of their workforce and the wider community.
