Health, Care & Wellbeing

Why your sector needs a DBS check?

Anyone who provides care to vulnerable adults and or children will require an enhanced DBS check.

This is because healthcare provision to a vulnerable adult or child is classed as a form of ‘regulated activity’ in legislation, and safeguarding measures are put in place.

Any healthcare professional, such as a physiotherapist for example, if they have their own company will be able to request a check as they are technically the employer in this sense that the company name will be on the certificate and not their individual details.

Now, if the healthcare professional does not have their own company but is eligible for a DBS check for example, someone who is self-employed undertaking locum work for instance then they should contact their regulatory body who should be able to request the check on their behalf, their local council who can do this or the relevant agency that they obtain their work through.

  • A basic check can be applied here, A basic check is a criminal record check you can request by yourself. Employers can also request a basic check for you if they have your consent.

A basic check will contain details of convictions and conditional cautions that are considered to be unspent under the terms of the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (ROA) 1974

  • At DBS Check Online, we process basic checks within 24 hours, and most of the time, you get your certificate within 2 working days.

  • It will be up to an employer to decide whether or not it is still valid or whether a new Basic Disclosure is required.

  • It is at the employer’s discretion to stipulate how regularly an employee or contractor needs to renew their certificate. In most cases individuals are asked to apply for a new certificate every 12 months.
