Enhanced DBS Check Online
What is an Enhanced DBS Check?
An Enhanced DBS Check is the highest level of check available, therefore it goes into the most level of detail. It reveals if a person has any spent or unspent convictions, warnings, cautions or reprimands on their criminal record. This check also has the option to search the Children or Adult Barred List, which is why it is highly recommended for the education sector, to discover if the applicant should be barred from working with these groups. The applicant’s local police force is also able to disclose other relevant information they hold on the applicant.
What does an Enhanced DBS Check show?
List of what is included in the enhanced disclosure checks:
– Caution
– Convictions
– Reprimands and warnings (now replaced by youth cautions)
– Previously stepped-down cautions or convictions
– Police intelligence reports (local police can add anything they think is relevant)
– Inclusion on the Children’s and/or Barring List (if specified on the application)
For each criminal offence that is recorded on the Check, the report reveals the conviction or caution date, name of the court, nature of the offence, date of the offence, and the details of the sentence imposed.
What job roles will need Enhanced DBS Checks for their employees?
The eligibility for an Enhanced DBS Check depends on the applicant’s workplace.
The applicant that works within one of the below establishments, requires an Enhanced DBS Certificate.
– Schools or nurseries
– High-security psychiatric hospitals
– CQC registered care homes
How do I apply for an Enhanced DBS Check?
For Enhanced Check, employers must apply on behalf of the potential candidate; individuals cannot apply themselves. Once the candidate has completed the application and it has been processed, the certificate will be mailed directly to the applicant. They will be required to present this to their new employer before starting the position.
How long does it take to receive an Enhanced DBS Check?
Generally, we find that Enhanced DBS Checks can be returned quicker when completed online rather than through a paper application. Some Checks can be returned to us in as little as 24 hours if there are no queries, whereas some can take a week. Some applications can take longer and there is no guarantee of a turnaround time.
Two types of Enhanced DBS Check
Enhanced DBS Checks can either be carried out with or without a barred list search. If a person is working somewhere like a care home or school, but isn’t providing care or training to the vulnerable group, it would only be an Enhanced DBS Check that was required.
If that person was caring, supporting or teaching a vulnerable group, an Enhanced DBS Check with barred lists search would be needed. The actual criteria can be extremely complicated, which is why we’re on hand to discuss your requirements before you start the checking process.

Other levels of DBS Checks: Basic and Standard
Basic DBS Check
A basic check will contain details of convictions and conditional cautions considered to be ‘unspent’ under the terms of the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974.
The Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 aims to give those with convictions or cautions the chance – in certain circumstances – to wipe the slate clean and start afresh.
Under the Act, eligible convictions or cautions become ‘spent’ after a specified period of time known as the ‘rehabilitation period’, the length of which varies depending on how the individual was dealt with.
Standard DBS Check
The Standard DBS Check certificate will contain details of both spent and unspent convictions, cautions, reprimands and warnings that are held on the Police National Computer, which are not subject to filtering.
Similar to Enhance DBS Check an individual cannot apply for a standard check by themselves. There must be a recruiting organisation who needs the applicant to get the check.
